Adventure Logs is our way of documenting the people, places, and rhythms that shape a crag-to-city life — the moments in between movement, travel, and getting dressed.
In this edition of Adventure Logs, we sit down with Emily Coutts — an avid rock climber, actor-writer-producer, and vintage-hunting fiend. You may know her as Keyla Detmer on Star Trek: Discovery, but beyond the screen, Emily moves through the world with a deep curiosity for movement, travel, and everyday rituals.
Fresh off a special trip to Japan, Emily shares reflections on the shape of a perfect day, the places that leave a lasting impression, and the practices that keep her grounded. From climbing and creative work to collecting stories (and clothes) along the way, this conversation explores how curiosity, routine, and exploration intersect — and what’s coming next.
Atas Awan: Where are you based?
Emily: Proud Canadian living in Los Angeles.
A: What does a good day look like?
E: Have a morning coffee in bed, meet friends at the gym for a climbing session, lunch and vintage hunting, then a dinner with my wife and friends!
A: You just came back from Japan! Top 3 recommendations for our community?
E: So hard to only choose three!
- Juugo Soba in Kyoto
- Amam Bakery
- Asahi on a bullet train

A: What does “progress” feel like for you now?
E: Progress feels like starting again. At the end of last year, work was so busy that I wasn’t able to train and climb the way I usually do. Now that I’m back in the gym, progress feels really gentle. It’s not punishing myself for not being where I was six months ago. It’s about returning. Beginning again. And letting that be enough, over and over.
A: What helps you stay grounded when everything feels noisy?
E: I’ve been taking a class at The Clown School, and with everything going on in the world lately, getting to be a complete fool for a few hours a week has been surprisingly effective.
A: What Atas Awan piece do you reach for on repeat?
E: Boundless Convertible Pants all day. I wore them nonstop on my trip to Japan. Comfortable enough to travel in, stylish enough for exploring, and the belt definitely came in handy after eating too much ramen.

A: What are you curious about right now?
E: I’m curious about what this year is going to bring. Last year was a hard year but it taught me a lot about my ability to stay focused and disciplined. I feel lighter this year, I feel ready to make some moves.
A: What’s next — even if it’s still taking shape?
E: I’m developing a new film with a good friend and we are really excited about it. I believe in this project in a big way.
